How Golf Changed My Life

Sail Away

There's nothing quite like the feeling of setting off into the open ocean in your very own boat. The idea of packing a picnic, enjoying the waves and getting away from life's distractions would appeal to most. However, using a boat is serious business, with care and attention needed for ensuring your boat remains in good condition, not just for appearances, but for performance and, more importantly, safety as well. This guide will offer some practical advice to help keep your boat working as new as part of your regular boat servicing.

A modern boat is more than just a hull and motor. They will all have electrical components, fabric and canvas sheets or covers, possibly plumbing and components that move and require lubrication. Much of this should be checked properly by registered electricians and professionals during a boat service. However, with less technical parts, home servicing is fine. The canvas, for example, should be cleaned of dirt which can rot and create mildew. You can wash this off with a scrubbing brush and some canvas cleaner or use some white vinegar mixed into a bucket of water. If you want to waterproof the canvas, as well, there are sprays available or wax bars commonly used for tents that will work on any canvas.

The fiberglass hull also needs some care. It too can collect grime and dirt and if it's not washed and waxed it can begin to look cloudy and old. This is due to oxidization which, thankfully, is easy to clean. A bucket of warm water with some degreasing detergent will work. Just make sure you use a sponge, preferably one with a textured scrubbing side, but something that's not too tough. You don't want to scratch the surface. Once this is done, be sure to wax everything to add further shine and protection to the hull.

When you go in for an annual service you should get them to check all of the plumbing, any electrical faults and the oil. It's not a bad idea to identify faults throughout the year in a logbook, as sometimes things like lights become faulty in the water due to a loose connection and may not show up when in a garage. As for any moving parts like hinges, don't be afraid to lubricate them frequently to protect the metal and keep things moving smoothly. Just remember to wipe away any excess oil which can build up and actually trap dirt and dust, leading to the opposite of the desired effect.
